SEOUL -- South Korea's health authorities on Wednesday confirmed the country's first five cases of Omicron variant infection amid a higher number of COVID-19 cases.
A married couple, who were fully vaccinated on Oct. 28, had traveled to Nigeria between Nov. 14 to 23. The couple arrived here on Nov. 24 and tested positive for the COVID-19 the following day.
In the latest tally, South Korea reported 5,123 more COVID-19 cases for the past 24 hours, logging the highest daily number since the country's first case was found in January last year. (South Korea-Omicron Infection-COVID-19)

HANOI -- Floods triggered by torrential rain in Vietnam's central region in the past few days have left 10 people dead or missing, the country's Central Steering Committee for National Disaster Prevention and Control said Wednesday.
The victims included six in Phu Yen province, four in Binh Dinh province and one in Kon Tum province, the committee said in its latest report. (Vietnam-Natural Disaster)

VIENTIANE -- The Lao government on Wednesday awarded the First-class Development Medal to the China State Railway Group and the First-class Labour Medal to the Laos-China Railway Co. Ltd. (LCRC), a joint venture based in Laos, for building the cross-border railway.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection (CHP) reported the fourth case of the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 on Wednesday.
The 38-year-old male patient arrived in Hong Kong from Qatar on flight QR818 on Nov. 24 for transit. He remained in the airside of the restricted area due to a visa-related issue and tested positive in a pre-departure test on Nov. 27 at the restricted area in Hong Kong International Airport.
