SYDNEY, NSW, Australia - Stocks in Asia were unwanted on Thursday. All the major indices edged lower.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 dived 278.15 points or 0.96 percent to 28,820.09.

The Australian All Ordinaries fell 18.30 points or 0.24 percent to 7,739.70.

The Hang Seng in Hong Kong lost 73.01 points or 0.28 percent to 25,553.73.

China's Shanghai Composite was off 43.89 points or 1.23 percent to close Thursday at 25,553.73.

On foreign exchange markets, the U.S. dollar was little moved. The euro hovered around 1.1604 at the Sydney close Thursday. The British pound was little changed at 1.3744. The Japanese yen firmed to 113.57. The Swiss franc was unmoved at 0.9188.

The Canadian dollar was steady at 1.2375. The Australian dollar edged lower to 0.7508 despite the Reserve Bank of Australia pausing its bond-buying programme. The New Zealand dollar was a fraction stronger at 0.7176.

Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones did worst, diving 266.19 points or 0.74 percent to 35,490.69.

The Standard and Poor's 500 declined 33.11 points or 0.51 percent to 4,551.68.

The Nasdaq Composite finished flat, down just 0.12 of a single point at 15,255.84.
