MANILA -- The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Philippines surged to 971,049 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 8,767 new cases on Thursday.

The DOH said that 105 more patients died from the coronavirus epidemic, bringing the death toll to 16,370. (Philippines-COVID-19)

MANILA -- Philippine fisherfolk and environmental activists on Thursday condemned Japan's plan to dump more than 1 million tonnes of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific ocean.

"We oppose any activity that will destroy the marine environment. We join the Japanese people and other countries in opposing the plan to dump radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean," Fernando Hicap, the leader of the national federation of small fishers in the Philippines, said in a statement. BANGKOK -- Thailand on Thursday confirmed 1,470 new COVID-19 cases and seven fatalities as the Southeast Asian country continued to contain the new spike in domestic infections.

All the 1,470 new cases were local infections reported in 66 provinces, with the capital Bangkok leading the case increase with 446 new cases, according to the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin. (Thailand-COVID-19)

JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Army detected underwater movement at 2.5 knots around the last location of the submarine Nanggala-402 missing during a torpedo firing exercise in waters north of Bali Island, according to an official source on Thursday.

KABUL -- The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a 50 million U.S. dollar grant to provide COVID-19 vaccines in Afghanistan, the Afghan Ministry of Finance confirmed on Thursday.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally reached 15,930,965 on Thursday as a record single day spike of 314,835 new cases was recorded in the country.

SEOUL -- South Korea's top nuclear envoy held phone talks with his U.S. counterpart on Thursday over the Korean Peninsula issues, Seoul's foreign ministry said.
